February 06, 2008 - We got our first chance to go up into the "communities" north of Bluefields.
A local pastor from Corn Island, Pastor Eli, had asked an evangelist to come from the US to hold a series of meetings, one at Pearl Lagoon and two at Haulover.
We took a ride on a skiff up through the intercoastal waterway up to the Pearl Lagoon area. It takes about an hour and costs 120 cordobas ($6.32). We stayed in a local hotel.
Prior to the meeting we went into the local jail to take some food and a witness to a man who had been jailed there. When a person goes to jail in Nicaragua, the jail provides no food. It is up to the friends and relatives of the inmates, and this inmate had no one.
The evangelist was Richard Coss, a man from Gulf Shores, Alabama who had been in and out of jails from the age of 9 until he met Christ at age 24. He has spent the nex 38 years of his life telling people about Jesus.
The meeting was held outdoors, since the church buildings were not large enough to accomodate the 150-175 people that were in attendance. They just took the church pews outside, strung up some lights, set up a sound system and they were in business.
The meeting lasted about two hours and there were about 15-20 people who came forward for prayer at the end of the meeting. The churches involved included the Baptist, the Moravian, the Pentecostal and even some came from the Seventh Day Adventist church. It was good to see them all able to work together.
The experience gave us a really good feel for the area and the needs.
