Monday was a great day. We held a meeting with the leaders of the youth of the two Baptist churches in town. We made plans to hold outdoor youth meetings once per month, in addition to establishing youth discipleship groups on a weekly basis for the kids.
The youth leaders decided that they wanted their youth meetings to be held outdoors so that more kids would come and would not be intimidated by going into a church.
This will require that we put together lighting and a tent to protect the musical instruments.
One of the most exciting things was our discussion about starting up a Christian camp for the kids. We have those camps in the US, but not here in Nicaragua. They have "youth encounters" every year, but they have to use cramped church facilities.
We are going to see about getting some land in the Pearl Lagoon area that we can clear and use as a camp. This would allow us to bring the kids away for a week of intensive spiritual training. It could also be used for training retreats, pastoral conferences, etc.
We will be making a trip to the Pearl Lagoon area later this week and will scout out some locations and see if the local leaders will donate the land. If so, we will have a nice project for people to come down and help us with.
On a lighter note, Kim got to see what real shrimp looks like. Here in Bluefields, you buy it right on the street from the guys who catch it. You can get a pound for 25 cordobas (about $1.30 US), but it does require some preparation.
