We made another trip to the Pearl Lagoon area to scout out property for a campground and to look at opportunities for ministry.
We took a boat ride up the waterway to Kukra Hill, then took a bus to Haulover. From there we walked to Awas and then walked back.
In Awas, we spoke with the town chief about receiving an allocation of property for building a Christian camp. He was very receptive. In the communities, the property within the town is owned by the community and is allocated by the leaders to the people who were born in that community for farming and other purposes.
This protects the land from being bought up and taken over by foreigners. People are allowed to become stewards of the land, but are not allowed to take ownership of the land. This way the land is never lost. Once the land is allocated to us for a camp, we will be allowed to use it as long as we have a camp there and take care of the property. If we abandon it, then it goes back to the community.
On the way back from Haulover to Kukra Hill, the bus broke down and we had to wait for another bus to pick us up.
If the work in these communities becomes a regular thing for us, then we may likely purchase a Hyundai diesel flatbed truck that we can put on a ferry from Bluefields to Kukra Hill, then use it to drive between Kukra, Haulover, Pearl Lagoon and Awas holding outdoor meetings.
With this truck, we will be able to carry a generator, lights, sound system, musical instruments, food and water for the trip as well as other supplies and equipment for construction on the campground.
We have a lot more pictures of the trip and the area in the gallery. Just click on the link below to look at these and get a better idea of what we are doing here. |
