On our recent trip to the Pearl Lagoon Communities, we visited the community of Awas. We had a good visit with the chief of the community, who appears willing to give us land for our youth campground.
One of the most memorable things was seeing an empty school. There is a good school building along with furnishings, but the government has not provided the funding lately for teachers. This community feels abandoned by the government.
There are about 40 kids that need this school for their education. The cost of providing two teachers for this school would be about $200 per month. That amounts to about $5.00 per child per month.
The only other option for them is to find their own transportation to Pearl Lagoon, but for most people, this is not an option, so the children go without a grade school education.
If you are interested about helping to meet this need, we can do more investigation to make sure that we have all of our information and figures are correct.
Based on the information we have received, if we had 8 people willing to pledge $25/month, this school could reopen. |
