As we write this article, we are sitting in the Managua airport, taking advantage of the free internet. (I took this pic with the camera on my laptop). We are headed up to GA for Jason's graduation from Boot Camp.
He seems to have done quite well, although there have been difficult days. As they are getting to the end of the nine weeks, the guys are all ready to get out. Some are developing attitudes that are difficult to deal with.
The discipleship groups are really coming along well. The leaders are taking a lot of initiative with their groups and their group members have been very faithful in attending the groups. We can't wait to get done with the building because we will be able to focus 100% of our energy on building up leaders.
The house is continuing to progress. Right now the guys are working hard on the fence. We are constructing a perimeter fence around t he entire property. It will be 440 feet in all. The picture shows the finished design.
The guys started to finish it with repallo (like stucco) but it was taking too long and the finished quality was not great, so we are ditching that idea. We will probably splatter coat it to provide a textured coat that will go on much faster and will be stronger. Kids are already starting to write on the front wall, so a textured coat will be much more difficult to write on.
We also started pouring the driveway. The guys were not used to the way that we do concrete. For one thing, they do not put any rebar in the concrete driveways. We used rebar and did a nice job of edge trowelling it and put a broom finish on the top.
We had the guys over for pizza and dominoes again Saturday evening and they had a good time. You would not believe what a national pastime dominoes i s in this country. Tim is starting to learn the strategy (and there is a strategy).
Right now, Ralston is in Rama purchasing more materials. He is buying 2000 concrete blocks, 500 bags of stone and 450 bags of sand (25 bags per cubic meter).
This will require 3-4 boatloads and about 8-10 trips to and from the wharf with our 1 ton truck.
This will give us the materials to be able to pour the second floor as soon as we get back to Bluefields. We need to get it poured before the rainy season starts or we will have to delay the work further. |
