The fact that we are in Nicaragua is a miracle unto itself. When Tim went through Bible College and Seminary, missions work was not even on the radar screen.
After a very short stint as an associate pastor, we were convinced that God did not want us in full time ministry at that point. We were confident that if he had a job for us to do, he would call us.
Fast-forward to 2003 when God began moving in our lives and we began moving from casual Christians to fully devoted followers of Jesus. The the call came . . .
A lady called our online pool store and explained that her husband was working with some missionaries (Vital and Ketly Pierre) in Bluefields, Nicaragua and they had built a pool with no pumps, filters, etc. She knew nothing about us in terms of our faith.
We had to look up Nicaragua on a map, because the only thing we knew about Nicaragua was Sandinistas and Contras and Oliver North's infamous slide show that never was.
Tim designed the pool system and helped them get the equipment and then the next spring, Kim, Tim, Jonathan and Jason (our sons) and Dan (our business partner) went to Bluefields to paint the pool with an epoxy coating. We also put a computer lab together.
We continued going to Bluefields on several trips to work on water systems, electrical, pool, and computers, but then the focus shifted to training leaders to study and teach the Bible.
As time went on, we began to feel like we really needed to move here to Bluefields, because we were not satisfied with what we were able to do on twoweek trips. We really needed to be here to have the kind of impact that was needed.
Eventually in 2007, the Lord showed us that if we wanted to do this, then we needed to leave everything else behind. We sold our two businesses (one at a loss, one at a profit) and in January 2008, we relocated to Bluefields, Nicaragua.
The process was difficult and at times stressful, selling businesses, selling cars, paying all the taxes, tying up loose ends . . . it seemed like never reach the end of the process. We still have a house and a truck in the US.
After we moved here, we took a shell of a house and built a building that serves as housing and ministry area.
There have been anxious moments along the way as we ended up spending 75% of our life savings on this project.
In the end, we will no doubt spend it all. It is difficult but necessary to let go of any security that is not based in Jesus Christ.
One verse that really spoke to us was James 5 where it is written "Woe to you rich people . . . for you have hoarded wealth in the last days." We do not want to be one of those people who dies with money in the bank that could have been used for God's purposes.
It is not right to worship at the altar of financial security, to exalt our own comfort over the needs of others who are just struggling to find food to eat and clothes to wear.
It has been an incredible journey thus far and we look forward to a lifetime of ministry in this needy country. We do not know how it will all unfold, but under the leadership of the Spirit of God, we intend to do the will of God here.
